This ancient Incan cross is not only beautiful
but full of meaning. The four long edges
represent the cardinal directions and the
twelve points are months of the year. The three
planes symbolize layers of existence in Incan
cosmology: hanan pacha, sky, where gods
live; kay
pacha, earth, of our human existence;
and uku
pacha, underworld for the dead or
unborn. The middle stone is the circle of life
that connects all worlds.
