Ichimay Wari - Lima

The Ichimay Wari Potters live on the South side of Lima. The community of potters emigrated from the Ayacucho region during Peru's period of political violence in the eighties. Ayacucho was the area hardest hit by the warfare which pitted Peru's Armed Forces against the Shining Path Revolutionary Movement. These Ayacuchan artisans are experts in the production of ceramics and textiles and are a fascinating group to meet, given their unusual history and internal organization.

The Ichimay Wari Association has been quite successful in their effort to identify new markets in which to sell their work. They have maintained a commitment to contributing to the development of South Lima through active participation in the "Community Roundtable Against Poverty" and other socially-aware activities to contribute to their neighborhood's development.  Most recently, the Association has been working to make their community a tourism stop for visitors to learn about Fair Trade and the crafts they work in.
