Big Banana Screening
The Event
Join us Thursday, July 28th 7:00pm for the St. Louis premiere of Big Banana and to meet its Cameroonian filmmaker, Franck Bieleu. Sample Fair Trade treats - including dried fruit made by farmers in the film - and participate in a raffle of Fair Trade products. Admission is free but donations to help alleviate costs are always welcome! RSVP is not required but encouraged. Please RSVP by clicking here >>
About the Film
Big Banana, a compelling new documentary by Franck Bieleu, sheds light on the hidden political consequences of the transnational fruit trade. Bieleu spent two years filming residents in the remote countryside of Cameroon and in St. Louis and London. Big Banana outlines Plantation du Haut Penja (PHP)’s land grabbing tactics and the devastating consequences for communities: poverty, pollution, and sickness from pesticides.
Consistent with a broad trend of oppression of the media in Cameroon, the April screening of Big Banana was illegally closed down. The authorities also shut down a human rights festival and arrested the organizer, another filmmaker. With the presidential elections of Cameroon scheduled for October, Big Banana has the potential to education people about the abuse of farmers, despite the Cameroonian government’s attempts to keep it from the public.
